“She plays an active role in supporting local parents with children with additional needs”
These are just a few of the many heartwarming comments made about our amazing Parent Champions volunteers and coordinators who came together for our two-day Parent Champions Conference and Awards on 13 and 14 May 2025.
Lydia Hodges, Head of Coram Family and Childcare welcomed delegates from across the UK to our 2025 Conference, saying:
“We are hugely passionate about the Parent Champions programme, and we appreciate how much you all do for your communities. It is wonderful to bring all the schemes together for the conference and to celebrate your achievements. Through your work, we all know how important creating a supportive community is to families and we are very proud to support such an amazing group of Coordinators and Volunteers”.
Dr Julian Grenier CBE gave the opening session. He talked about what is known from the research on early childhood development and findings from parent’s experiences, as well as sharing his own experiences working with parents and family centres. Julian is Senior Content and Engagement Manager at the Education Endowment Foundation and a trustee of the charity Thrive at Five. Before joining the EEF, Julian was Headteacher of Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre in Newham, East London.
Maria Sciara, Team Leader at the Department for Education then spoke about intersection of early education entitlements for both working parents and families receiving government support, and on opportunities around the early years’ pupil premium. Conference delegates shared their experiences of the challenges that some parents face in accessing childcare entitlements and navigating a complex application system. Maria said how helpful it is to have feedback from Parent Champions.
Next up was Victoria Dickinson of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) who talked about best practice in volunteer recruitment. Victoria is a Volunteering Associate Consultant and has worked in the voluntary sector for over 30 years working with both grassroots and large national charities.
We then heard from Carol Bennett, Parent Champions Coordinator, about how parent participation is implemented in Wandsworth, and about the important role of Parent Champions. Carol has built a fantastic Parent Champions scheme alongside her amazing volunteers, with their input and voice shining through in everything they do.
Delegates then heard from Selda Aygun, Parent Champions Coordinator, who shared her experience from managing the Parent Champions scheme in Islington. Selda has done an incredible job of developing the scheme since it was launched in 2018, with over 119 parent volunteers recruited and trained, including 12 parents of children with SEND, and 27 different languages spoken.
Day two of our Parent Champions Conference started with a workshop reflecting on achievements and learning run by Ellie Grace, Programmes and Development Manager, Coram Family and Childcare.
Then Jasmine Wilson-Daze, Ellie-May Keywood and Lesia Sakhkova talked about the amazing work of Parent Champions Norfolk. The team support families across the county, including families from Ukraine. There are currently 65 volunteers, of whom 21 are from outside the UK, particularly Ukraine. In 2024-25 the team supported 237 individuals and attended 79 groups/events.
The excitement then really began to build as Dr Carol Homden CBE, CEO of Coram, made the opening welcome to the Parent Champions Awards 2025. Carol thanked the judges of this year’s Parent Champions Awards, Sarah Rance, Liz Roberts, Holly Robinson and Judith Trowell, and praised all the amazing Parent Champions volunteers and coordinators saying “We are so inspired by the work that you do for your communities”.

Diane recognised that many SEND parents in the community felt disconnected from local services and in response, she created a simple yet highly effective ‘Lets Talk’ session that allowed parents to meet and share experiences.
There were three schemes nominated for the Parent Champions Scheme of the Year Award: Parent Champions Bath and North East Somerset; Parent Champions Islington; and Parent Champions, Lewisham.
The Parent Champions Scheme of the Year Award 2025 winner is Parent Champions Islington. The Islington team focuses on supporting residents with children under five, sharing key messages around health, early education and home learning as well as helping shape future services. Since it launched in January 2018, the scheme has recruited and trained over 119 parent volunteers – this includes 12 SEND parents and 27 languages spoken. Parent Champions in Islington have a measurable impact on the take-up of local services with take-up of parenting courses up 60% and take-up of free early education for 2-year-olds increasing from 64% to 77%. The scheme focuses on partnership work, and many partners contributed to their nomination for this award.
The Islington Family Hubs team said: “Parent Champions have contributed enormously to the development of Family Hubs in our area to ensure the hubs meet the needs of local families and their children. They have helped to design promotional materials, launch events and wider community engagement activities. They have also shared their views and experiences with the national programme teams from DfE and DHSC which was very much appreciated.”
The conference ended with a quote from a Parent Champion in Islington: “Being part of the local Parent Champions network has allowed me to build connections in my community and given me confidence to be the best parent I can be with the knowledge of resources to support my family and signpost others. I love that I feel connected to my community when I walk down the street or through the park and it’s nearly impossible to not run into someone I’ve met through the program. It makes me feel connected and grounded and rooted for myself and my family and as someone who has no family in this country other than my husband and children - the phrase “it takes a village” has come to life for me and I feel like I found “my village” through these amazing people and resources and community.”
