You are here: Parent Champions Awards 2023
The annual Parent Champions Awards are an opportunity to recognise our volunteers’ achievements and valuable contributions. Once again we were blown away by the quality of the nominations we received and the impact that Parent Champions are having in their community.
Coordinator of the Year
Coordinator of the Year recognises the Parent Champions coordinator who has demonstrated outstanding levels of dedication, creativity and boldness in bringing communities together and has worked hard to support and encourage their Parent Champions in their roles and in their personal development.
Nominees
Leanne, coordinator of Parent Champions Caerphilly, only came into post at the existing South Wales scheme this year but has already built strong partnerships in the local community.
Claire, coordinator of new scheme Parent Champions Wrexham, has worked hard to set up this new scheme, nurturing volunteers throughout the process and encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone.
Winner
The winner of this year’s Coordinator of the Year award went to Sandie, coordinator of Parent Champions Barnet. Alessandra, who volunteers with Parent Champions Barnet, said:
Biggest Personal Development
The award for Biggest Personal Development recognises the Parent Champions volunteer who, through their involvement in the network, has made significant positive change in their own life in addition to positively affecting the lives of others.
Nominees
Inspired by her own experience of receiving support from the Family Information Service, Nikkitha from Parent Champions Wrexham has brought endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the scheme.
Becky, also from Parent Champions Wrexham, was similarly motivated by her own experience; Becky received a lot of support as the parent of an autistic child and, as a Parent Champion, had the idea to host an event for Autism Acceptance Week that had many attendees including the Mayor.
Winner
The Biggest Personal Development award went to Ruby from Parent Champions Wandsworth. Ruby was the scheme’s first recruit and, though shy at first, has always been keen to get involved. As a result, Ruby’s development has been outstanding in all areas. Not only does she go out of her way to share information with parents and carers but she is also committed to developing her own professionalism. Ruby has spoken on short films for the local authority on the power of parent voice, presented a NAFIS award and spoken on Coram webinars. Ruby is always coming up with innovative ideas to move the scheme forward. Coordinator Carol said:
Best Newcomer
The Best Newcomer award recognises new Parent Champions volunteers who have made significant progress or impact since joining the scheme.
Nominees
Rebecca from Parent Champions Caerphilly has recently become a Parent Champion but is already an incredibly valuable member of the team who is always willing to attend group sessions and further promote the work of Parent Champions.
Alexandra, Elidona and Xheni, all from Parent Champions Barnet, have each made an incredibly valuable contribution to their scheme in a short space of time. Alexandra, Elidona and Xheni are excellent at supporting each other to run sessions and to create a warm and welcoming environment for parents and children. They all provide a listening ear which has been a great comfort to many families who feel isolated.
Winner
The Best Newcomer award went to Anila from Parent Champions Hillingdon whose personal passion of supporting people back to work has been invaluable to her scheme and local community. In addition to sharing her knowledge of funded entitlements, Anila signposts parents to the best training for their professional interests and supports others in finding their voice, speaking up for their children at school and accessing appropriate services.
Biggest Impact
The Biggest Impact award recognises the Parent Champions volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding levels of dedication, enthusiasm and teamwork. We received the highest number of nominees for this category – a testament to our Parent Champions’ passion and hard work.
Nominees
Charlotte and Cheryl from Parent Champions Caerphilly. Charlotte has gone above and beyond to help signpost people in the right direction, all while being the parent of three young children, and Cheryl has excelled in her work at events for children and families and is always putting a smile on people’s faces.
Jade, Charlotte, Gloria and Kate from Parent Champions Barnet.
Jade has been exceptional on the Cross-Hub Advisory Board and in the local Hub Advisory Group and has been a particularly strong advocate for parents of children with SEND.
Charlotte is committed to hearing the voice of the community and feeding it back to the Early Years/Primary Service Manager and is dedicated to exploring new ways of delivering information to parents, exploring the use of both physical displays and social media.
As well as reaching out to many families, Gloria has attended local advisory board meetings and Partnership Events in Barnet to share her views on how information should be presented to parents.
Kate is a very proactive member of Parent Champions Barnet and has taken a great deal of initiative in organising speakers to visit local schools to discuss Chickenshed theatre’s free workshops for adults and children.
Winner
The winner of Biggest Impact was Jacqueline from Parent Champions Croydon whose idea for Croydon’s ‘Chill n Play’ group was born of her conversations with young mums from ethnic minority backgrounds. ‘Chill n Play’ began as a peer-to-peer group for parents from ethnic minority backgrounds but has grown to accommodate all parents. Its success is the result of Jacqueline’s heart that keeps nourishing the group and welcoming more and more parents.
Scheme of the Year
Scheme of the Year celebrates the outstanding work of a whole Parent Champions team.
Nominee
Parent Champions Caerphilly have done some fantastic outreach work to spread the word about Flying Start, a big expansion of childcare provision in Wales that many families did not know about. Last year Parent Champions Caerphilly held 4 outdoor events attended by over 2,600 service users. In addition to this, the Caerphilly scheme host regular Zoom coffee mornings, online cooking classes and information sessions about mental health, wellbeing and home learning.
Winner
Parent Champions Lambeth are this year’s Scheme of the Year. Like last year’s winners, Parent Champions Lambeth are a new scheme – they celebrated their first anniversary in March 2023 – but have already made an enormous impact. 81% of local families eligible for the two-year-old offer have taken it up – the highest ever take-up in Lambeth.
