You are here: NAFIS Conference and Awards 2024
What a fantastic two days!
We were thrilled to welcome over 150 delegates from across the country to the NAFIS Conference and Awards 2024, held on 26–27 November.
This annual gathering provided a fantastic platform for members of the National Association of Family Information Services (NAFIS) to come together, share insights, and learn from one another. Delegates had the chance to hear from sector experts, exchange ideas, and explore innovative approaches to supporting families. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our speakers, who generously shared their expertise and inspiration.
Family Information Services (FIS) are at the heart of local communities, providing essential guidance to parents on childcare and other critical services.
This year has brought significant changes, with the expansion of funded childcare and wraparound provision transforming the early years landscape. Even more changes are on the horizon in spring 2025, presenting both opportunities and challenges as local FIS teams strive to keep families informed and ensure parent carers understand how to access their entitlements.
Off to a great start!
We began with informative updates from the Department of Education (DfE). Isha Sohal shared an update on the roll out of Early Years Entitlements as work progresses towards the September 2025 launch of 30 hours of funded childcare for eligible working parents of children from 9 months to primary school age. Following this, Jo Lindley provided an update on developments in wraparound provision.
The morning then continued with an inspiring keynote by Katie Ghose from Kids on Transforming lives – the power of quality information and advice for disabled children, young people and their families. Family Information Services across the country are responsible for promoting their Local SEND Offer, so this session was particularly relevant.
Delegates then delved into practical workshops. Jason Whittaker from Suffolk County Council, explained how benefits such as Universal Credit interact with childcare entitlements, offering clarity on a topic that often confuses parents.
Meanwhile, Sam Shorto and Emma Goddard from Coram led an interactive session on smart survey strategies, offering practical guidance on planning and running surveys to harness good-quality feedback from parent carers. Many Family Information Services work closely with parent carers, and surveys are an essential tool for gathering insights and feedback.
The day concluded with the FIS Forum, featuring a lively discussion about the challenges for Family Information Services and an opportunity to share good practice and learn from success.
Reflections on the current policy landscape.
Day two of the conference opened with reflections from Lydia Hodges, Head of Coram Family and Childcare, on recent policy changes and developments in the early years sector.
She welcomed the Government’s commitments to initiatives such as expanding funded childcare to benefit children from nine months old, wraparound provision, and breakfast clubs. However, she stressed the importance of not overlooking the needs of the most disadvantaged children. These children have the most to gain from early education, making it crucial that local authorities and providers are adequately resourced and supported to make this a reality.
Our recent research into early education for disadvantaged children highlights that many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, miss out on their 15-hour entitlement. This is a complex issue influenced by policy design, delivery, and family beliefs and preferences. Research such as this, alongside our annual childcare surveys, provides vital insights for shaping future policies to ensure every child can access quality early education.
Later, Glen Jump and Lotte Horrie from Ofsted then shared a crucial update on the new flexibilities for childminders and insights from the Best Start in Life research review. Ade Labinjo, who runs St Michael’s Nurseries Ltd and serves on our board of trustees, offered valuable insights from a provider's perspective on navigating the pressures in childcare, which will help local authorities better support providers in their areas. The morning concluded with an update from Mitesh and Alex from the DfE, on the Family Hubs digital programme, which could transform Family Information Services directories across the country.
The second round of workshops followed, including a session by Matt Ogle, founder of the Entire Club, on the difference between inclusive and fully inclusive childcare. Coram Children’s Legal Centre also ran a workshop on childcare entitlements for families with no recourse to public funds and those in the asylum system, providing practical information for supporting these families.

Last but certainly not least was the eagerly awaited NAFIS Awards ceremony. The awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and recognise the amazing work done by FIS colleagues across the country. We were thrilled to receive another round of brilliant nominations this year.
