You are here: Celebrating collaboration and innovation at the NAFIS Awards 2023
November 2023
One of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of our annual NAFIS conference is the opportunity to celebrate our amazing local authority members at the NAFIS awards. This closing ceremony has been running since 2020, and was set up by Coram Family and Childcare and the NAFIS steering group to recognize the innovative and inspiring work taking place in FISs all around the country.
This year, we were really excited to be joined by Liz Roberts as the judge and presenter of the NAFIS awards. Liz is a consultant and writer, familiar to many of our NAFIS members as the previous editor-in-chief of Nursery World, leading its editorial operations for many years. Liz has frequently chaired early years events and taken part in working groups, as well as commenting on the early years sector for national TV, radio and newspapers. She is a trustee of Coram Family and Childcare and the Centre for Research in Early Childhood (CREC). Liz said:
It was such a privilege to welcome Liz to the conference stage to announce the eagerly awaited winners and we’re pleased to share them below.
Suffolk County Council, Best Directory
The first NAFIS award went to Suffolk County Council for Best Directory, recognizing the important steps Suffolk has taken to make sure that parents can easily access high-quality information about vital services on a user-friendly and welcoming directory. This win is a testament to the brilliant partnerships and collaborative work taking place in Suffolk, including a joint close working relationship with the Public Health and Communities Directorate.
Suffolk (FIS) is presented on the Suffolk InfoLink directory platform, along with Help for Adults, the Emotional Wellbeing Gateway, and the Suffolk SEND Local Offer, providing one information resource to support communities and families in Suffolk. The directory also includes a dedicated information page for help with the cost of living, including advice about childcare costs and information about foodbanks in the region.
Jamie Rowell, Senior Product Manager (SEND and Social Care) at Idox said: “As the headline sponsor of the NAFIS Conference, we were excited to hear that Idox customer Suffolk County Council has won the Best Directory. Our commitment to creating impactful solutions is mirrored in the success of the Suffolk Infolink Family Directory.
Developed collaboratively with parents, carers, young people, and both voluntary and statutory services, this platform exemplifies how technology can empower local authorities to showcase crucial information for the well-being of families and young people.” Huge congratulations to Suffolk on this well-deserved achievement!
Derby City, Most Innovative FIS
Derby City won the award for the Most Innovative FIS, a brand new category that celebrates new FIS initiatives and projects. Derby’s innovative work this year has included the development of ‘52 Things to do before you’re 5’, a fantastic free booklet of fun activities that that parents and children under five can do together. To ensure no families miss out, the booklet is reflected digitally on the council’s webpages enabling families to enjoy it in the language of their choice alongside other accessible tools.
Through an online registration process, data is captured to keep connected with families and enables the FIS to support them and inform them of its other core services such as funded childcare. There is also a rolling Facebook campaign which spotlights each activity on a weekly basis, inviting families to share their images and anecdotes. In tandem, children’s centres and Family Hubs are engaging their parents on-site, creating and guiding them through these weekly activities.
The team said: “Derby FIS is absolutely thrilled to win the NAFIS Awards for Most Innovative FIS. To be recognized not just locally but nationally with the honour of being judged by Liz Roberts gives kudos to the whole project. So far we have sent 4000 packs out to Derby families and with 2024 looming, we expect it to be even more successful.” We can’t wait to see more from this wonderful project.
Buckinghamshire, Best Use of Social Media
The award for the Best Use of Social Media went to Buckinghamshire Family Information Service, recognizing their creative and inventive work in engaging new audiences. Local families use the Buckinghamshire FIS social media channels to stay up to date with the latest activities and events in the area, and to get information and advice from the Family Support Service.
Buckinghamshire has done some fantastic work in finding new opportunities to share resources and FIS services alongside events and awareness days. Social media channels have been used during National Storytelling Week to guide families to their nearest library, during Children’s Mental Health Week to signpost families to find support, World Autism Acceptance Week to signpost families to the Local Offer, World Heritage Day to help families to find historical places to visit in Buckinghamshire and National Breastfeeding Week to help new parents with information about feeding their new baby.
The team said: “This award is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication in providing good quality and informative social media to help children, young people, and their families in Buckinghamshire. Since 2012, we have been using various social media channels to communicate with families and advise them of the support that is available to them in Buckinghamshire. Social media has become an integral part of our lives, and we use it effectively to help and support our families. Our work is evidence of how social media can be used to make a positive impact.”
Reading, Best Local Offer and Best Promotion of the Two Year Old Offer
And finally, a special shout-out to the amazing team at Reading Family Information Service who have won two awards this year! Reading won the award for the Best Local Offer and the Best Promotion of the Two Year Old Offer at this year’s ceremony. This remarkable achievement celebrates the hard work and dedication of the FIS, who has been working closely with parents in the local community to co-design the services and resources that meets their needs.
Reading went through a whole directory platform refresh of the SEND Local Offer website/directory in 2022, running workshops with the working group to further scope out the look and feel, navigation and search options. They also carried out consultation sessions with parent carers to gather feedback to build a platform created by parent carers, for parent carers.
The Local Offer team said: “we are passionate about ensuring families have access to high quality, information, advice and guidance, offering a robust ‘whole’ services to our families. We embed the 3 ‘C’ in all aspects of the SEND Local Offer, Communication, Collaboration and Co-Production.”
Reading FIS has also done a huge amount of engagement work in promoting the 2-year funding, including presentations to health visitor and school nursing teams, Job Centre staff and coaches and they have also attended refugee and asylum events to inform eligible families on how to access the funding. Reading have also developed a Parent Champions scheme, and this peer-to-peer support is leading the way in helping to raise the profile and take up of the 2-year funded offer in the local area.
One parent from Reading said: ‘I was so pleased to have been told about FIS as I was new to the area and didn’t know anyone. I found a brilliant childminder and my child is so happy learning and developing. I’m going to tell everyone I know about FIS and the 2-year funding, what a great service.” A massive round of applause to Reading for this exceptional and inspiring work, and thank you for sharing with this the NAFIS network.
The 2023 awards are an illustration of the power of FIS and the instrumental role they play in their local areas. We’re looking forward to celebrating this work further and we’ll be inviting the award winners to speak at a NAFIS showcase in 2024. This Spring event will be an opportunity to learn more about the background to these projects and share these examples of excellent practice with the wider network.
