Volunteering and Covid-19
Can I volunteer as a Parent Champion during Covid-19?
Yes, our Parent Champion schemes are still operating remotely!
How are you making volunteers safe?
Our schemes always follow government guidance and will never ask volunteers to do anything that could jeopardize their safety. While social mixing is not possible, Parent Champions reach out to local families online or over the phone.
What happens after I sign-up?
A Parent Champions Coordinator will contact you and discuss the next steps of the recruitment process.
I can’t see a scheme available in my local area, but I want to volunteer. What do I do?
Please register your interest by completing the volunteer sign-up form and we will contact your local authority to see if they are able to set up a scheme for you to join.
I’ve changed my mind about volunteering, but I have filled out a sign-up form. What should I do?
No problem, email email@example.com and let us know.
What documents do I need before starting my role as a Parent Champion?
Depending on the scheme, you may need to fill out an application form. All schemes will require a DBS check. This is free of charge and you will have support to complete the process. You can discuss this further with your Coordinator.
I’m not sure how much time I have to volunteer
Parent Champions give as much or as little time as they can to the role. We usually suggest 2-3 hours per week.
What will I gain from being a Parent Champion?
Volunteering as a Parent Champion can help build your confidence, transferable skills, and provides access to training and employment. It also gives you opportunities to give back to your community and you can make close friends working within a team of like-minded people.
Do you reimburse expenses?
Out of pocket expenses will be covered.
I have signed up, but haven’t heard from anyone. What should I do?
Email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will look into this for you.
I am a Dad, can I be a Parent Champion?
Yes, Parent Champions are parents and carers.
Will volunteering as a Parent Champion affect my benefits?
Volunteering as a Parent Champion is very unlikely to affect your benefits but if you have a Work Coach do let them know that you are starting volunteering.
What support do I get as a Parent Champion?
What training will I receive?
Volunteers will receive full induction training and can also receive support to access additional training opportunities. This training will either be run face to face or online.
Who will support me?
You will receive contact details for regular communication with your Parent Champions Coordinator and other Parent Champions. You will also have regular Parent Champions meetings with your Coordinator and other Parent Champions.
I’m nervous about volunteering
Volunteering, like anything new, can sometimes be a little scary, especially if you haven’t tried this type of thing before. Your confidence will grow over time and once you have had some training and a few conversations with parents, you will start to feel more comfortable about speaking to people you haven’t met before. Many Parent Champions like to work in pairs which can help to build your confidence as you can share and draw on each other’s strengths and skills.
