National Association of Family Information Services (NAFIS)

The National Association of Family Information Services (NAFIS) is a membership scheme for local authority Family Information Services (FIS), run by the Family and Childcare Trust. Family Information Services provide information, advice and assistance to parents, carers and professionals on the range of children, family and young people’s services available within their area and are an ideal starting point for any family-related query you may have.

Our members benefit from a range of support services including, training, publications, electronic communication facilities and regular networking opportunities. Our membership is made up of Family Information Services across the UK. Our NAFIS membership represents over half of all Family Information Services and the work you do supporting families across the UK.

Not a NAFIS member? Membership is open to all Family Information Services. It’s a great opportunity to share best practice, network with other members and influence national policy. Find out more about membership and the benefits for you.

We also operate an annual conference, which you can read more about here. Thank you to all who attended our 2016 conference.

The Family and Childcare Trust also run a quality assurance scheme for Family Information Services. Find out more about the Families First Quality Award for Family Information Services here.

Your local Family Information Service

Are you looking for information, help or advice on local services available to children, young people and families in your local area?

Your local Family Information Service is the ideal starting point to help you to support your children up to their 20th birthday, or 25th if your child has a disability.

They provide free, multilingual, impartial advice on a wide range of areas, including:

  • Registered childcare, including children’s centers, child-minders, nurseries, pre schools, breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday play schemes
  • Help towards childcare costs
  • Free early education
  • Extra help if you need childcare for a child with a disability, special educational needs or out of hours childcare.

Having a child with a disability brings a myriad of administrative complexities. Despite my professional background as a solicitor, there are times when I have felt as if I have been wading through treacle. The service Family Information Service provides is an absolute godsend to parents like me.
